MFD2 Install Guide

A popular upgrade for the Octavia II is the addition of an MFD2 Satellite Navigation Head Unit. These are available in both CD-ROM and DVD-ROM guise however the Skoda units are currently only CD-ROM.

They appear to be readily available from various eBay sellers for around £300 to £400 for a CD-ROM version. Some sellers that have been used and reported to be ok are -

Method

You should disconnect the negative lead from your battery before commencing this job.

Firstly you need to remove the large outer trim that surrounds the radio and other switchgear. This can be done by gently pulling from under the lower section above the ashtray and levering at the indicated positions with a trim removal tool or similar. Then remove the large storage tray from the top of the dash, again by levering in the marked positions.

Remove the four corner covers from the outside edge of the existing radio to reveal the four securing screws. Remove these screws.

With the four securing screws removed the unit will now slide toward you and pull out, be careful not to damage the Climate Control unit.

Release the large Quadlock connector from the back of the radio, it has a small latch on the bottom of it. Release the AM/FM antenna, this too has a small latch on the bottom of it.

Fully remove the old radio and carefully place it to one side.

Install the GPS antenna and cabling to your chosen location and modify the CD changer cabling (Shown Below) if you have a 2007 model year car.

Push the AM/FM antenna connector and GPS antenna connector into place and then carefully connect the Quadlock connector.

Insert the MFD2 Unit into the dash taking care not to squash any cabling behind it, you can look down through the storage tray opening to check. Replace the four securing screws.

Reconnect the battery negative lead.

Switch on the MFD2 Unit and insert the four digit security code. You should now have a working MFD2 Navigation Unit fitted to your car.

Fit the new dash surround and refit the large storage tray.

Coding the car using CAN-BUS compatible VAG-COM

When installing the MFD2 into a car not previously equipped with an MFD2 you will need to recode the CAN Gateway, Radio and your new Navigation Controller. Before changing the coding of any controller it is essential that you make a note of the original coding of that unit.

CAN Gateway - Controller 19
This controller uses Long Coding, recoding should be carried out using the Long Coding Helper built into VAG-COM. Select Byte 3 and put a tick in Bit 3 to enable Controller 37 Navigation.

MFD2 Tips & Tricks

When on the 'MAP' display you can press 'MAP' again to get a bigger display of direction/turn, distances etc.
When on 'MAP' display you can press the right side select knob and it hides the side menus and gives the full display to the map.
To mute the radio press 'BAND' and then select Radio Mute.

Calibrating your position.

Ideally park near a junction to give you a good reference point.
Press Navi, then Setup and then Position on Map. Use the right hand knob(or right hand button set) to set your position on the junction and save.

Wondering what version of the Navigation CD you have in your MFD2?

1. Take the cd out of the MFD2
2. Mount in a windows operating system
3. Browse the root of the CD
4. Look for a file called INFO.TXT
5. Open the file in wordpad/notepad

Look for the line at the top which for a 2004 disk would read - Project-Name: TAN Great Britain 2003/2004 DX

2007 Model Year Onwards - Aux Input Socket

When fitting to a 2007 Model Year Octavia fitted with the Aux Input Socket you will probably experience a loud buzzing interference when using the CD changer. I have traced this down to a variation in the vehicle wiring in the Blue 12 pin Multipin Plug Connection to allow for the Aux Input Socket.

Pre 2007 MY Octavia wiring is as follows -

Pin 1 - Not connected
Pin 2 - CD changer, left and right channel, earth
Pin 3 - Not connected
Pin 4 - CD changer, voltage supply, terminal 30
Pin 5 - Not connected
Pin 6 - CD changer, DATA OUT
Pin 7 - Not connected
Pin 8 - CD changer, left channel, CD/L
Pin 9 - CD changer, right channel, CD/R
Pin 10 - CD changer, control signal
Pin 11 - CD changer, DATA IN
Pin 12 - CD changer, CLOCK

2007 MY Onwards Octavia wiring is as follows -

Pin 1 - Aux in left
Pin 2 - Aux in earth
Pin 3 - CD changer, left and right channel, earth
Pin 4 - CD changer, voltage supply, terminal 30
Pin 5 - Not connected
Pin 6 - CD changer, DATA OUT
Pin 7 - Aux in right
Pin 8 - CD changer, left channel, CD/L
Pin 9 - CD changer, right channel, CD/R
Pin 10 - CD changer, control signal
Pin 11 - CD changer, DATA IN
Pin 12 - CD changer, CLOCK

From this you will see that Skoda have connected the Aux In Socket audio to Pin 1 and Pin 7 as well as a ground to Pin 2.

Pre 2007 MY cars had the CD Changer ground connected to Pin 2 but in post 2007 MY cars this has been moved to Pin 3 to make way for the Aux In Socket ground on Pin 2.

Pin 3 on the MFD2 does not give a satisfactory ground route to the CD Changer. To cure this it is necessary to remove the Aux In Socket ground (Brown) from the Blue Multipin Plug Connection Pin 2 and insert the CD Changer ground (Black).

If you wish to retain the function of the Aux In Socket you can amend the wiring as follows - Thanks to RossM for the info.

You'll need to purchase a connector -

12 Pin Green Flat Contact Housing (Plug) Radio/Telephone Connection - 3B7 035 447 B - £3.38

The three wires from the Aux In Socket are -

Yellow - Pin 1 - Aux In Right
Green - Pin 7 - Aux In Left
Brown - Pin 2 - Aux In Ground

Remove these from the Blue connector and insert them into the new Green connector in the following positions -

Yellow - Pin 1 - EA-R
Green - Pin 7 - EA-L
Brown - Pin 2 - EA-G

You should now have Aux Audio from your MFD2. You may need to check the setup menu to ensure it is enabled.
