Multi Function Steering Wheel Install

The Octavia II has the capability for a Multi Function Steering Wheel (MFSW), which was fitted as standard or as a factory option to some cars.  Thanks to Andrey Economov of Russia for this guide that he produced when changing the standard vRS steering wheel for the 4 spoke MFSW.  Sadly at the moment there is not a Multi Function 3 spoke steering wheel option.

Before commencing any work on your car it is advisable to connect your VCDS to the car and carry out a fault code check.  You will also need to confirm that you have a suitable steering controller (16),  some of which are -

1K0 953 549 AK
1K0 953 549 AM
1K0 953 549 AQ
1K0 935 549 BK
1K0 953 549 CC

Any work involving the airbag system on the vehicle should be treated with extreme caution, the negative lead should be disconnected and any residual power allowed to dissipate before commencing any work.

To remove the steering wheel you will first need to remove the airbag.  Assuming that you have followed the safety instructions above, rotate the steering wheel 90' off centre which will reveal the first of the securing clips for the airbag. Using the flat blade screwdriver gently ease the metal spring clip over the retaining part of the steering wheel to release it. Rotate the steering wheel 180' to reveal the second of the metal spring clips and again using the screwdriver release this latch.

Airbag Removal

Once these have been released you will be able to lift the airbag out of the centre of the steering wheel and release the yellow plug behind it which is connected to the slip ring. Place the airbag safely to one side. With the airbag removed you will reveal the M12 splined securing bolt as shown below.

M12 Spline

Using the M12 splined tool and a suitable driver, remove the bolt and place it to one side.  When removing the splined bolt be sure to hold the steering wheel and not pull against the steering lock.  Turn the steering wheel back to the centre position with the wheels pointing ahead, remove the steering wheel and place it to one side.

You will need to swap the airbag wiring loom for one which supports the MFSW. It is advisable to make some notes regarding the connections of the airbag wiring loom before removing the old loom. With the loom removed the airbag will look like the one below.

Air Bag Without Wire

The new MFSW wiring loom is shown below.

Air Bag Loom

With the new MFSW wiring loom fitted, your airbag should look like this.

Air Bag With New Loom

Installation is the reverse of removal, firstly place the new steering wheel onto the steering column shaft and screw in the M12 splined bolt.  Tighten the bolt to the correct torque shown above and place a mark/stamp on it to indicate it has been removed once.  The bolt must only be reused five times before being replaced.

Offer the airbag with the new loom fitted up to the steering wheel and plug the small black plug into the MFSW controller and the large yellow plug into the slip ring.  Position the airbag into position on the steering wheel, ensuring that no wires have been trapped behind it.  Once you are sure it is correctly positioned then push it firmly into place with a sharp strike of the palm of your hand, make sure it is correctly seated in the steering wheel.

Make sure that the key is removed from the ignition and that there are no people in the car before connecting the battery lead.  Once the battery is connected and without getting into the car, put the key into the ignition and turn it on.  Assuming that everything is ok, you should not have an airbag warning light.  If you see an airbag warning light then immediately turn off the ignition and disconnect the battery before checking your connections.

All being well you've managed to get everything back together correctly and you'll now have a 4 spoke steering wheel much like the one shown below.
